pre marriage courses

The 'Let's Make It Work' relationship program will have a very positive effect on your relationship now and in your future married life. It will allow you to share common experiences and issues at a comfortable level and raise awareness about your relationship now and in your future life as you transition in your relationship.

Couples can either participate in a Sunday workshop or a PREPARE Relationship Inventory (via appointment).

Areas explored in program:

Couples at each course choose the specific issues they wish to explore. Some popular choices are as follows:

  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Decision-making
  • Exploring relationship, familial and societal expectations
  • Designing a marriage that works for both of us
  • Mixing different cultural backgrounds and family influence
  • Recognising and meetings needs – your needs, my needs, our needs
  • Coping with stress
  • Budgeting and financial planning
  • Balancing work and family; adjusting to parenthood, twin careers, etc
  • Reasons for marrying

Marriage is a lifelong commitment comprising of many transitions. Obviously, lifelong learning continues well after the marriage ceremony, but our "Let's Make It Work" program aims to raise awareness of relationship strengths and encourages couples to discuss some of the critical and practical issues surrounding the marriage commitment. Assisting couples in the development of sound communication skills is at the heart of connecting.

Cross-Cultural Course

Cross-Cultural Workshop and Counselling in Coburg

Have you ever considered the following questions? Ask yourself -

What does family mean to me?

What does culture mean to me? How will my culture impact on my relationship and family?

Which cross-cultural issues will affect me? (if any)

Which faith will I practice? When it comes to children, will they be christained - my faith or my partner's faith; or both?

If your answer is yes, you need to consider whether these issues are going to be problematic in the future as situations arise where a decision needs to be made and a clash of cultural wills may prevent logic and common sense to prevail.

In collaboration with PRONIA (formerly AGWS), you are invited to attend a workshop addressing issues arising from cross-cultural / family of origin influence on relationships. The program is run in Coburg, Melbourne.

Areas explored

  • Not being accepted by his/her family
  • Not living up to expectations and feeling inadequate or judged
  • Conflict about religious ceremonies
  • Over involved in-laws/parents
  • Isolation and feeling left-out
  • Being cut-off
  • Parenting/grandparenting issues
  • How to improve communication
  • Standing up for yourself without offending
  • Resolving conflict

The manner in which we understand, welcome and communicate difference as a couple will play a major role in determining how effectively we incorporate and deal with cultural issues as they arise in our everyday lives.

Some comments from participants:

“It should be run more often …. Like a refresher course to help married couples”

“You can relate to the experiences”

“It is like history repeating itself; we all share similar experiences and react in the same dysfunctional manner – switching off”

“Kia was non-judgemental, encouraged discussion and made people feel at ease in a safe environment”

PREPARE Relationship Inventory

PREPARE - Building Strong Relationships

PREPARE Relationship Inventory helps identify important relationship dimensions, your strengths and the areas you would like to improve in your relationship. The first session involves each individual completing an extensive questionnaire covering all facets of their relationship. The results and feedback are worked through with the facilitator in the second session.

PREPARE Relationship Inventory involves two sessions and is completely private. This is not a group workshop and sessions are held at Coburg (Melbourne).

An outreach service is available for couples whom geographically are not able to attend the second session of the program as the first session will be conducted online. This is provided via Skype and provides an opportunity for couples to receive their assessment from our facilitator via the Skype medium.

Eligibility will be determined at enrolment.
